OWNER, CHIROPRACTOR, INJURY REHAB SPECIALIST

Dr. Joseph Kottoor, DC, FCCPOR

Dr. Kottoor is the owner and clinic director of Leaside Sports Medicine. For over two decades, Dr. Kottoor has become the go-to source of treatment for professional athletes (including athletes from the NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB and MLS), Olympians and celebrities from all across the globe. He is a Chiropractor, Rehabilitation Specialist, Medical Acupuncture Provider, Certified Active Release Techniques® Provider, Certified Personal Trainer and provider of custom orthotics and custom knee bracing. He did his undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto in Kinesiology and graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 2002 with his Doctor of Chiropractic. Dr. Kottoor then completed a 3 year post-doctoral fellowship in Rehabilitation Sciences to help him become a leader in the field of sports and injury rehabilitation. As a former high level volleyball athlete, he has a special interest in sports injuries of the foot, ankle and knee.

SPORTS MEDICINE PHYSICIAN, DIRECTOR OF MEDICAL SERVICES

Dr. Darren Edelist, MD, CCFP (SEM), Dip Sport Med (CASEM)

Dr. Edelist has over 20 years of clinical experience in the diagnosis, treatment, recovery and prevention of a wide spectrum of sporting injuries and musculoskeletal conditions.  Dr. Edelist has extensive experience working with athletes of all ages, from all types of sports and has provided on-site medical care for various sporting teams and events. 

During your in-office assessment, Dr. Edelist will seek to understand your problem, and goals for recovery; provide you with a thorough examination; order investigations as necessary to aid in the diagnosis of your injury or condition; and discuss an individualized and evidence-based treatment plan for your specific diagnosis and goals.  As part of his management plan, Dr. Edelist may recommend exercise rehabilitation, medications, off-the-shelf bracing, custom hip or knee bracing, custom foot orthotics, and/or various injection therapies including cortisone, hyaluronic acid (Monovisc and Cingal) and orthobiologics (PRP and ASP) to create a solution that works best for you.

Dr. Darren Edelist received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Western Ontario in 1999.  He completed resident training in Family Medicine at the University of Toronto in 2001.  In 2002, he continued his postgraduate training with a Fellowship in Sports Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.  Dr. Edelist holds the Diploma in Sport Medicine from the Canadian Academy of Sport and Exercise Medicine, the Certificate of Added Competence in Sport and Exercise Medicine from The College of Family Physicians of Canada, and a GP Focused Practice Designation in Sports Medicine from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.  He is involved in teaching family medicine residents with the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Edelist was the Team Physician for Ryerson University Sports from 2004-2019.  He served as a physician for the Council of Amateur Sport Kickboxing, and has affiliations with martial arts clubs across the Greater Toronto Area.  He has also worked with Judo Ontario, the Mississauga Ice Dogs, Canada's National Ballet School, the Toronto and Mississauga Marathons, and was a fellow physician with the Philadelphia Phillies.  In recent times though, you are more likely to see Dr. Edelist in an ice hockey rink, or on a baseball or soccer field coaching and cheering on his daughters.

CHIROPRACTOR

Dr. Kate Hood, BKin, DC

A graduate of the University of Western Ontario’'s Kinesiology program, Dr. Kate went on to pursue Chiropractic following a series of debilitating back injuries. Choosing to attend Palmer West College of Chiropractic in San Jose, California, she graduated with awards in Leadership, Sport and Clinical Excellence. While at Palmer West she was actively involved with several on-campus organizations including the college’s chapter of the ACA Sports Council. Serving in several positions, she ultimately went on to serve for two terms as it’s President. This role afforded her the opportunity to work with athletes of all calibers from a variety of sports, including but not limited to the Ironman Triathlon (Kona HI 2000-2003), Professional beach volleyball (2000-02), Track and Field (US trials 2000), Swimming (Santa Clara Invitational 2000-03). She has a special interest in spinal pain and sports injuries.

PHYSIOTHERAPIST

Jonathan Tay, BKin, M Phty

Following a double major undergraduate degree in Kinesiology and Medical Sciences at Western University, Jonathan completed his Master of Physiotherapy (M Phty.) at the University of Sydney in Australia. He was an active member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association, having been a member in good standing involved in various areas of physiotherapy. Working alongside former Chairman of Sports Physiotherapy Australia, Andrew Han, Jonathan was involved as a team physiotherapist for Baseball New South Wales and the Australian Baseball League (an MLB affiliate). Having had experience working at a large medical facility in Western Sydney, Jonathan has a keen interest in all sorts of musculoskeletal conditions and loves a collaborative approach to care. Currently, Jonathan is eager to work with his patients to maximize their lives whether they have injuries or seek preventative work and uses his toolkit of deep tissue massage, joint mobilisation, dry needling, and exercise to get them there.

 

PHYSIOTHERAPIST

Matthew Chin-Yee, PT, MScPT, BHSc, CMAG, CMT

Matthew is an experienced physiotherapist with extensive post-graduate training and skills whose goal is to provide his patients the best result-oriented care through a thorough understanding of your personal history, needs, and goals.

Matthew received his Masters of Science in Physiotherapy (MScPT) from McMaster University and has gone on to complete multiple courses and certifications with advanced training including: Neurokinetic Therapy (Level 3 certified), Proprioceptive Deep Tendon Reflex Therapy, Contemporary Medical Acupuncture, spinal manipulation/manual therapy (Certified Manual Therapist), vestibular therapy, temporomandibular joint pain and concussion management. He serves as a Neurokinetic Therapy teaching assistant and as a mentor for physiotherapists and other health practitioners.

Over the years Matthew has become known for treating difficult musculoskeletal cases and balance/dizziness disorders where previous treatments have been unsuccessful. With his education Matthew conducts detailed assessments of movement, and muscle strength to determine key compensatory patterns (muscle and reflexive sensitivities) that often cause pain, and dysfunction. Using this approach he has worked successfully with a variety of patients from professional and national level athletes to office workers. 

Matthew has a passion for seeing his patients thrive in all aspects of their lives. Whether it be complex chronic issues or maximizing physical performance Matthew is keen to work with you to get you where you deserve to be. 

PHYSIOTHERAPIST


Rachel Poole, BA (Kin), M Phty St

Rachel completed her kinesiology degree at Western University and then went on to complete her Master of Physiotherapy Studies at the University of Queensland in Australia. During her time abroad, she was trained using various treatment techniques, such as joint mobilization, soft tissue release, and exercise prescription as tools for rehabilitation and recovery. Since graduating she has taken additional courses on acupuncture, dry needling, and concussion management.

As a clinician, Rachel really enjoys getting to know each and every one of her clients. She endeavours to understand the root cause of an injury and then centre her treatment around helping patients achieve their goals. Her treatment style includes various manual therapy techniques and she likes to incorporate movement into her treatment plans. Within her treatment plan, there is always a focus on injury prevention and building resilience in the body. Rachel strongly believes that movement is the best medicine! She also has a strong foundation in understanding athletic injuries as she has played a lot of sports.

 

CHIROPRACTOR

Dr. ‍Roberta Da ‍Re, DC

Dr. ‍Roberta Da ‍Re has extensive experience successfully treating a wide variety of patients and enjoys challenging cases. She graduated ‍Summa ‍Cum ‍Laude, with Clinic Honours from ‍the ‍Canadian ‍Memorial ‍Chiropractic ‍College ‍(CMCC) in 1996. That standard for excellence followed her to achieve comprehensive training in many areas including rehabilitation, exercise therapy as well as obtaining a certificate of Medical Acupuncture from McMaster University.

‍Dr. Da Re  ‍has ‍received several ‍awards ‍including ‍the ‍Chiropractic ‍Foundation ‍for ‍Spinal ‍Research ‍Award ‍for ‍her ‍work ‍on ‍the ‍physical ‍rehabilitation ‍of ‍low ‍back ‍pain. She also regularly ‍acts ‍as ‍an ‍examiner ‍for ‍the ‍Canadian ‍Chiropractic ‍Examining ‍Board's ‍licensing ‍examinations. 

Roberta listens attentively, approaching each patient thoughtfully and with a professional manner. She conducts detailed assessments and uses current, evidence-based, customized treatments. These may include gentle joint manipulation, a variety of soft tissue techniques, athletic taping, acupuncture, exercise, postural, and ergonomic advice to ‍help patients ‍achieve ‍their goals as quickly as possible. She is often asked to collaborate in the care of patients with challenging musculoskeletal issues of the hand and upper limb including post-surgical cases. 

Dr. Da Re practiced for 8 years in the Italian Alps working closely with competitive skiers and snowboarders. She also has extensive training in the analysis of running form. Using video footage, she performs detailed evaluations, allowing her to target her treatments towards  improving performance and resolving running related sources of pain. 

When ‍not ‍treating ‍patients ‍she ‍remains ‍very ‍active ‍in ‍a ‍wide ‍variety ‍of ‍sports ‍including ‍swimming, ‍cycling, ‍snowboarding, ‍rock ‍climbing ‍and ‍yoga ‍which ‍gives ‍her ‍a ‍unique ‍perspective ‍on ‍the ‍treatment ‍of ‍sports ‍injuries.

 

PHYSIOTHERAPIST


Stephen Sin, BA (Kin), MscPT

Stephen grew up in Toronto, Ontario and spent most of his childhood playing tennis, volleyball, and basketball. As a young competitive athlete, Stephen experienced his own struggles with injury and rehabilitation. This personal experience in combination with his passion for helping others led him to pursue a career in physiotherapy.

Stephen completed his Master of Science in Physiotherapy from Brunel University in London, UK and a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology from Western University. While studying at Western, Stephen gained experience as a student athletic trainer working with former NBA and Division 1 NCAA basketball players on the London Lightning Basketball Club. During his time in the UK, Stephen further developed his clinical skills working in London’s top teaching hospitals specializing in trauma and orthopaedics. He enjoys treating a wide range of clients – whether it be a post-operative patient, a weekend warrior or an elite athlete.

Stephen believes in a holistic treatment approach and uses manual therapy, acupuncture, and exercise prescription to help his clients reach their personal goals. He integrates the latest evidence into his practice and has a passion for continuing education. Stephen has keen interest in pursuing additional certifications in manual therapy, dry needling, and vestibular/concussion therapy.

Outside of the clinic, you can find Stephen on a basketball court, taking photos in downtown Toronto, or cheering on the Leafs and Raptors.

 

PHYSIOTHERAPIST

Radu Radulescu BSc, MscPT

Radu is a Physiotherapist and lifelong athlete who has played competitive tennis and basketball. This has exposed him to the world of physical rehabilitation from an early age as a patient where he noticed the benefits of physiotherapy and active rehabilitation.

His passion for health and fitness led him to complete his Master of Physical Therapy from the University of Western Ontario after receiving a Bachelor of Science from the University of Waterloo. Additionally, Radu was a Teacher’s Assistant for the School of Anatomy lab at Waterloo University where he helped teach anatomy. 

Radu has experience in a variety of settings and patient demographics, including neurological patients, acute care patients, athletes, and in orthopaedic settings and community care. Radu is a firm believer in empowering patients to restore function and reach their goals through individualized evidence-based treatment approaches, manual therapy, active rehabilitation and education. 

Outside of work, Radu can be found enjoying the outdoors, travelling, reading, and always looking to try out new restaurants and unique dining experiences.

 

REGISTERED MASSAGE THERAPIST

Lisa Hawley, RMT

Lisa graduated from the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy in 2007, and is registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario. Her treatment specialties include prenatal and infant massage, sports and sports injury massage, deep tissue massage, motor vehicle accident recovery massage and lymph drainage massage. She has been playing sports her entire life with some injuries along the way which provides great insight into how to sympathize and treat her clients effectively.

LEAD RECEPTIONIST


Julie Murphy


Julie is the friendly face you see when you walk into the clinic and the voice you hear on the phone calling you for your next appointment. She has 15 years of administrative experience in the veterinary field where she found the loves of her life in 3 rescue cats who have worked very hard to make her the doting cat mom that she currently is.


When she isn't working as an administrative powerhouse at Leaside Sports Medicine, she is often found at the Rogers Centre cheering on the Blue Jays or the Scotiabank Arena lamenting for the Leafs, travelling (New York, the Outer Banks and Pittsburgh are her top travel destinations) or watching as many true crime documentaries as possible.

 

RECEPTIONIST/MARKETING COORDINATOR

Caitlin Little

Caitlin is one of the smiling faces that you will see when you walk into the door here at Leaside Sports Medicine. 

When Caitlin is not at the clinic she enjoys running, baking, and traveling. One of her favorite destinations is London, England where she enjoys lots of tea, pastries, and visiting family.
