As a chiropractor who spends a lot of time treating a wide range of hand, upper-limb, and neck injuries, I get asked this question often. If your hands are feeling numb, tingly, or “asleep,” your body is sending you a message. It’s saying, “Hey! Something needs attention.”
These sensations may be caused by an issue in your hand, but they could also be coming from areas further away, such as your neck, or somewhere in between.
Common Causes of Hand Numbness and Tingling
These are some of the most common culprits:
Nerve Interference in the Neck (Cervical Spine)
Your neck is like a busy electrical junction box. If one of the nerves exiting your cervical spine gets irritated, compressed, or inflamed, it can create unusual sensations along its entire pathway—including into your hands and fingers.
Clues: Symptoms on just one side; worsens when driving, when you look down at your phone or sleep in awkward positions.
Tight Muscles & Entrapment Along the Arm
Nerves travel a long road—from your neck, through your shoulder, down your elbow, and into your wrist, to your fingers. If a tight muscle pinches them anywhere along the way, tingling can happen.
Clues: Symptoms after workouts, lifting, or long hours at a keyboard.
Carpal Tunnel Crowding
Your wrist has a tunnel (literally!) where your median nerve passes through. If the space becomes cramped from swelling, repetitive motions, or poor wrist position, the nerve protests.
Clues: Tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers; worse at night.
Circulation Slow-Downs
Sometimes it’s simply reduced blood flow. Poor posture, crossing your arms tightly, or leaning on your elbows can temporarily compress vessels.
Clues: Pins-and-needles that resolve quickly when you change position.
When Should You Get It Checked?
- If symptoms last more than a few days
- If you notice muscle weakness or dropping objects
- If the sensations wake you up at night
- If the tingling is spreading or getting more frequent
Because there can be many possible causes of numbness and tingling in your hands, it is essential to undergo a thorough examination to pinpoint the source of the symptoms. Getting a proper diagnosis is the first step towards getting lasting relief.
